Fragile, Romance…

“We stand before Athena, unbowed…” Most young men encounter “the truth of love” in their lives, and in 1996, Al Rendon and gary s. whitford set out to explore the tenuous nature of romance. Al had set up a collection of floral photographs. Al and gary selected and sequenced 28 of the toned silver gelatin prints. gary wrote a prelude (available in the book) and a long poem, with a stanza under each print. The resulting story documents the early excitement of attraction and passion, the momentary shadow of doubt and unfortunate demise of a love affair. Only true love can break that cycle, and Al was lucky enough to find his life partner a few years later with his wife Liz. Fragile, Romance… was exhibited at the San Antonio Central Library.
